Upriver to Morning: A Journey to Wisdom
Guest, Tish McFadden
Come experience the inspiring story, art, and songs of Upriver to Morning with author and composer, Tish McFadden. Whether you are a teacher, a young person, or young at heart, this presentation will delight and entertain you. Tish's original fable delivers enduring life lessons that convey universal wisdom for all ages and deepen our capacity for compassion, our sense of belonging, and our connection to nature.
Tish is a former professional archaeologist and anthropologist, and gifted musician, author, and music teacher in Ashland, Oregon. She met and befriended Takelma elder, Taowhywee Agnes Baker Pilgrim (Grandma Aggie) in the 1980s while working to protect ancient sites, artifacts, and cultural features of her Indigenous ancestors in the Rogue River and Applegate River watersheds.
Her engaging story dramatizes ancient wisdom Grandmother Agnes shared with Tish, weaving inter- generational themes within the context of Salmon's year-long journey from the Pacific Ocean to the Rogue River's source at Boundary Springs in Oregon, near Crater Lake. Tish will share the why, how, and when her Upriver to Morning project began, her meetups with Grandma Aggie, readings from the book, and a sample of the songs she wrote to enhance the story. Tish welcomes special guest presenters: Brenda Patton, Lisa Kramer, Bucky Dennerlein, and Linda Mullens, who will share their own experiences incorporating this original material into their circles.
Comprehensive educational tools accompany the book. The curriculum is aligned with Oregon State and Common Core Education Standards, with Spanish translations.
Copies of the book, songbook, and Tish's original songs on CD, will be available for purchase at this event through her nonprofit sponsor, the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon (cash or check).
